In 2017, a trial competition group was established by INAS for athletes with High Functioning Autism – ‘II3’. This is to enable athletes with Autism, but without Intellectual Disabilities (ID) to have an international platform to develop competition opportunities.
The addition of the II3 (Autism) group is a welcome development for these athletes and the INAS family, and also a new and exciting challenge for our organisation.
We are committed to ensuring the same ‘gold-standard’ approach to 3 athletes that we apply to existing groups, ensuring athletes meet the diagnostic criteria for this impairment group in keeping with our evidence-based approach by developing an eligibility system that is both scientifically robust but fair to nations across the globe.
To support this, INAS is establishing an expert panel to discuss these issues, agree an approach and make recommendations to the INAS Eligibility Committee.
The work of the panel will initially be carried out by email and video conference, using a virtual system to store and comment on documents and proposals. We would like to the panel to comprise a range of people ensuring that we have as many INAS Regions as possible represented. Ideally, the experience we are looking for includes:
- Understanding and experience of working with people with Autism;
- Knowledge and experience in using tests to assess Autism;
- Knowledge of and/or access to the research literature associated with Autism;
- Understanding and experience of sports eligibility and classification;
- Experience of coaching athletes with Autism;
- Experience of being an athlete with Autism;
- Experience of being a parent of an athlete with Autism;
- Access to professional networks related to Autism.
We are not expecting each member to have expertise in all these areas, but we hope across the panel all these areas are covered. The working language will be English so participants will need to have a good grasp of written and spoken English. The role is voluntary and all participants will share a commitment to developing competitive sporting opportunities for athletes with Autism.
